Sustainable Development Goals

Learning Goals

Apprehension of basic knowledge about mechanics and resistance of materials, so that students can better reconcile structural systems with architectural design.

Contents

Portal frames. Deformations and bending moments.
Load paths in structures.
Notions of prestressing in concrete structures.
Geometry of sections: Centre of gravity, Moment of inertia.
Instability phenomena. Column spanning. Slenderness. Critical load.
Behaviour of materials: Mechanical behaviour of steel, glass, concrete, natural stone and wood. Characterisation of the rigidity of a material through the modulus of elasticity. Notions of strength and stiffness of a structural element.
Structural safety. Actions in building structures. Design criteria: ultimate limit state and utilisation limit state.
Building structural systems. Structural design. Guiding principles of the structural solution. Particular aspects of the structural solution. Structural types.
Notions of pre-dimensioning: expedient methods for estimating the dimensions of structural elements.

Teaching Methods

The course is organised into theoretical-practical classes, which are organised into oral presentations, exercises, development of applied practical work, testing and discussion.

Assessment

The classification in this curricular unit may result from one of the following evaluation regimes: continuous evaluation or final exam.

Continuous assessment:
frequency (F): the final grade of the frequency cannot be less than 10.0 values.
2 group assignments (T1 and T2) to be carried out during the semester, whose minimum grade in each of them cannot be less than 10 points.
FinalGrade = (0.4xF) + (0.3xT1) + (0.3xT2), whose grade cannot be less than 10.0 values.

Evaluation by normal season exam:
1 exam (EN) whose minimum grade is 10 points.
FinalGrade = (0.6xEN) + (0.2xT1) + (0.2xT2), where T are the group assignments carried out during the semester.

The evaluation by appeal season exam, special season exam and extraordinary season exam consists of 1 exam:
1 exam (E) whose minimum grade is 10 points.
FinalGrade = (0.8xE) + (0.1xT1) + (0.1xT2), where T are the group assignments carried out during the semester.

Class attendance is mandatory (75% of classes). Those who exceed the number of absences may only submit to the appeal period examination.
