Sustainable Development Goals

Learning Goals

Expected outcomes: understanding the processes responsible for the production of microstructures observed in deformed rocks, and its relationship with the metamorphic processes.

Skills: ability to interpret the microstructures observed in thin-section and its relation to the proposed mineral associations and interpret the evolution model for the physical conditions of growth processes of new textures on deformed rocks.

Contents

Relationship between deformation and metamorphism.
Intra-crystalline deformation mechanisms.
Brittle deformation vs Ductile deformation.
Cataclasite and Mylonite.
Foliations, lineations and metamorphic mineral growth.
Practical application to shear zones and progressive deformation with different conditions of pressure and temperature.

Teaching Methods

This course will be designed through theoretical-pratical teaching as well as the practical applications of the concepts during laboratory classes. Each topic will have an pratical exercise to integrate the several applications of the concepts lectured.

The evaluation will be made through: i) Participation in practical laboratory classes and/or fieldwork and ii) Theoretical-practical report. The evaluation instruments will be weighted in the final grade, 30% and 70%, respectively.
