Sustainable Development Goals

Learning Goals

The students will be expected to relate the structure and form of the chemical entity with the molecules function and action, as a medicine, pollutant or as an energy harvesting or storage device.
The student will also gain insights into various modes of chemical reactivity, including photochemical and enzymatic methods.
The students will become more experienced in problem solving; principally in the context of chemical reactivity.

Contents

Anthropogenic organic compounds. Persistent organic pollutants (POPs), hydrocarbons, organic solvents and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), perfluorinated compounds (PFCs), flame retardants, cleaning agents and corrosion inhibitors, pharmaceuticals and personal care products, pesticides and others.
Reactions of organic compounds (such as drugs or pollutants etc) and mechanisms. Hydrolysis, reduction, oxidation and C-C bond forming reactions. The photochemical and electronic behaviour of conjugated and aromatic compounds. Photochemical reactions of selected compounds.
Biotransformations. Reactions mediated by microorganisms. Enzyme Catalyzed Reactions.

Teaching Methods

During the course of this lecture program different teaching tools are used. Besides the normal lectures the student is encouraged to resolve a series of exercises concerning material given in the lecture program. E-learning and other internet platforms are used to provide mini-tests and make available the lecture material and other relevant information. The material given will be supported by a number of problem-solving theoretical-practical classes.
The assessment will be based on measuring the acquisition and understanding of knowledge and measuring the development of skills in the various components of the discipline.
The evaluation is conducted principally on the basis of a final written exam with option for two tests (representing 75% of the final grade) and the remaining part of the evaluation focuses on mini-tests and on the participation in departmental seminars (representing 25% of the final grade).
