Sustainable Development Goals

Learning Goals

The focus of this unit will be based on fundamental concepts and developments of seismology: fundamentals of elasticity theory, solutions of the wave equation, eigenmodes, ray tracing, waves propagation and free oscillations. The physical processes associated to the origin of earthquakes (seismic source) will be focused as well. The main techniques of modeling and inversion of seismic waves will be described in details.
Conquering a level of autonomy that allows the student to apply their knowledge to plan and realize a real case study.

Contents

1) Complements of continuum mechanics.
2) Equations of motion.
3) wave propagation inside the Earth.
4) Internal waves, surface waves.
5) inelasticity and anisotropy.
6) Earth eigenmodes.
7) Seismic Source.
8) synthetic seismograms.
10) Analysis of seismic data.

Teaching Methods

The teaching is structured through integrated theoretical and practical classes through application of methodologies based on analysis and problem resolution. Field study is also included. First the problem is studied from a theoretical perspective and then we will analyze the various techniques of numerical resolution. We will provide learning environments where the student is encouraged on the one hand to structure their learning autonomously and on the other promoting environments that encourage knowledge sharing.
The final classification is obtained by the average of the evaluations of the work carried out throughout the semester (40%) and of the final exam (60%).
