Learning Goals

Students will be able to 1. express themselves coherently in academic writing; 2. engage in critical reading approaches; 3. acquire knowledge and practice in identifying and producing different types of academic written texts; 4. acquire knowledge and practice in planning, brainstorming, note-making, paraphrasing, summarizing, referencing, quoting, proofreading and rewriting; 5. acquire knowledge and practice in different elements of writing: argument, discussion, cause & effect, comparison, examples, cohesion and generalization.

1. How to write an effective text: coherence, cohesion, clarity.
2. Grammatical correctness.
3. Academic reading and writing: effective reading for effective writing.
4. Academic writing:
4.1. Steps in written production.
4.2. Types of texts: essay, argumentation, summary.
4.2.1.The structure of the technical-scientific text.
4.3. Referencing and norms for citation.
4.3.1.Quotation, paraphrasing, plagiarism.

Teaching Methods

The course provides practice in writing for a particular purposeacademic writingthrough models and examples of academic texts. Both the process and the final product are considered. Students are encouraged to discuss and compare some of their writing and to draft and check their writing carefully through proofreading. The assessment, formative and continuous, will be done through practical work, with the elaboration and final presentation of a written/oral research project, which aims to apply the concepts acquired throughout the semester. According to the Academic Regulations of the University of E?vora (RAUE?), a final exam (100%) may also take place.
