Learning Goals

This course aims to provide students with an in-depth understanding of the development of the field of Social History. It will explore how different contexts and time periods have shaped our understanding of society, examining a variety of scales of analysis, both temporal and spatial, and different ways of knowing (epistemologies). The course will equip students to:
1. Develop historical thinking by placing social changes within their broader historical context;
2. Understand how concepts and categories have been constructed in specific historical and geographical settings;
3. Conduct long-term comparisons between different societies and time periods;
4. Utilise a range of methodological approaches to build historical knowledge;
5. Assess the strengths and limitations of various historical sources;
6. Promote the creation of new historical knowledge through independent research projects;
7. Develop strong written and oral communication skills to discuss historical topics.

1. Historiographical development of social history: from the Annales School to subaltern and post-colonial studies
2. Construction of social, occupational, and professional categories
3. Migrations, mobilities, and social resistance
4. Communities and families
5. Conceptions of femininity and masculinity
6. Religious and social minorities

Teaching Methods

The course Thematic Seminar in History II ? Social History will adopt diverse teaching methodologies, such as:

1. Orally presenting, discussing, and arguing the programme content through inquiry-based and problem-solving teaching;
2. Debating and deconstructing social history concepts;
3. Encouraging participation in debates, problem-solving, and oral presentations by students;
4. Promoting dialogue, independent and collaborative work, and constructive peer criticism to foster original thinking among students;
5. Applying the learned content and concepts to practical work, addressing contemporary societal challenges;
6. Using digital tools and resources for the construction of knowledge, graphical and visual representation of history, and critical thinking.

Assessment

The seminar will assess students through the following components:
1. Attendance and oral participation (10%).
2. Project work and oral presentation (20%).
3. Written assignment (70%).
