Learning Goals

This Course Unity (CU) aims to introduce basic subjects in the field of Geological Sciences.
Students must acquire basic skills and competences that enable them to understand the genesis and evolution of planet Earth. As a practical component, they should recognize the main minerals constituent of sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rocks, as well as textural aspects of these rocks.

Contents

The genesis and differentiation of planet Earth.
The Plate Tectonics theory and geodynamics.
Petrogenetic and hydrologic cycles.
Atoms, molecules, crystals and major groups of minerals.
Sedimentary processes and rocks.
Igneous processes and rocks.
Metamorphic processes and rocks.
Geological materials as fundamental raw materials.

Teaching Methods

The CU will be taught in theoretical-practical classes (TP) with expository (theoretical) and laboratory (practical) components. In this component, students will be able to observe and classify minerals and rocks, at mesoscopic and microscopic levels.
The evaluation will be done through theoretical-practical tests.
