Chair in Animal Welfare

The Chair in Animal Welfare aims to promote a holistic approach to meat production. Combining the principles of animal welfare, the need to preserve the environment and biodiversity, and product quality, the chair aims to study alternative forms of animal production that enable:

  • Developing sustainable production systems, including energy efficiency, conservation of natural resources;
  • Improving animal welfare, reducing stress and promoting natural behaviours;
  • Assessing the nutritional and organoleptic quality of meat as a guarantee of food safety throughout the production chain;
  • Reducing the environmental impact of animal production, including lower water and energy consumption, and mitigating greenhouse gas emissions;
  • Strengthening consumer confidence in animal products through transparency of procedures, traceability and honest communication.
