Learning Goals

Revise and elaborate on the main concepts of monetary theory, such as the definition and quantification of
money, the mechanisms of money supply and demand; the objectives and instruments of monetary policy.
Analyse the role of monetary authorities in conducting monetary policy. Examine the financial and monetary
relations in the international monetary system, in particular in the EMU. Study theory of interest rates, their
relations with other macroeconomic variables and the term structure of interest rates. Investigate the new
developments in monetary theory and the challenges currently faced by the monetary authorities.
Understand the global financial system and particularly the basic functions and instruments of the financial
institutions; contact with the definition and practice of applied research work in monetary economics; control
over the quantitative and qualitative tools of economic analysis; capacity for critical analysis of the contents
and effects of monetary policies.

Foundations of monetary theory; Theory of interest rates; Fiscal discipline as the guarantor of monetary
stability; Transmission channels of monetary policy; Rules versus discretion in monetary policy; Objectives,
indicators and instruments; Monetary policy strategies; The Monetary Policy of the European Union

Teaching Methods

The work in the classroom promotes periods for student participation, clarifying and discussing questions
related to the unit contents, encouraging the learning process. All classes are supported by the common visual
aids, and a brief summary and a list of the main bibliography is supplied in each and edited in the
course’s web page.
Besides the classroom work, students are expected to read supplementary material and to write, present and
discuss research work, guiding their interest and scientific curiosity.
