Learning Goals

The main objective of this curricular unit is to provide the students with an in-depth knowledge of structuring themes in the History and Culture of Portugal, articulating national, European and international contexts. It also intends to develop skills to:
- develop critical thinking on structural issues in the History and Culture of Portugal and skills to work it a context of teaching and learning.
- develop historical thinking, taking into account the analysis of causes and effects of changes over time; the inferences from different historical sources, with diverse supports (photography, paintings, written documents, oral testimonies, material culture); the selection of sources for confirmation or refutation of hypotheses and the apprehension of historical multiperspective.
-develop autonomously knowledge through research, design and execution of work projects.
-develop writing skills and oral presentation (argumentation) on the program themes.

1. Identity and memory
a. To be Portuguese: Identity factors and myths
b. What is Portugal? History, memory and otherness
c. National symbols and holidays

2. Spaces, population and society
a. The territory. Natural and humanized landscapes. Administrative divisions
b. Borders: between Spain and the sea; capital and capitals
c. The evolution of the Portuguese population. Aging and low birth rates: Portugal in the European context
d. Migration and diversity

3. Classical culture and popular culture
a. Oral culture and written culture
b. Schools and universities
c. Built patrimony and intangible heritage

4. Communities and powers
a. The places of political power - from the Assembly of the Republic to local authorities
b. The importance of municipalism and municipalities
c. Religious administration: from the parish to the diocese
d. The organization of local life and its institutions. The associative practice. The exercise of citizenship

Teaching Methods

Teaching methodologies are diversified seeking to promote participatory and eminently practical learning. They value participation and debate, autonomous work and individual responsibility. In the theoretical classes (15T), the teacher will present the theoretical framework. The students will develop, in practical classes (30P), their own research, organization, systematization and analysis of the information.
The moodle platform will be used for the development of teaching activities and for the execution of the tasks proposed to students, showing their involvement.
Continuous assessment modality: debate sessions on the different topics complemented by the presentation of 4 papers (750-800 w) on the learned subjects and possibilities of their implementation in the context of Pre-school Ed and 1st CEB (60 %); Realization of a work project (2000-2500 w) and its oral presentation (40%).
Final Assessment modality: Realization of a work project (4500-5000 w)(50%) and a written test (50%)
