Learning Goals

The objective of this curricular unit is twofold: on the one hand, it aims to broaden student’s knowledge and understanding of the history of the language sciences and, on the other, to develop critical thought and competences applied to sources that constitute the memory of the historical construction of the European vernacular linguistic traditions. The curricular unit will focus both on relevant periods of the historical elaboration of national traditions and on specific (meta)linguistic problems, in the light of predominant linguistic trends.
Students will be able to: 1. Apply historiographical models to historical sources from different periods; 2. Analyze historical sources of the codification of vernacular European idioms; 3. Have a systemic, critical and contextualizing understanding of national traditions (comparing the Portuguese one with others); 4. Transfer acquired knowledge to new sources of historiographical information.

Contents

The Syllabus is organized into 5 chapters: 1 - Linguistic historiography: epistemological issues and the status of Historiography within the context of diachronic studies. 1.1 – Theories, trends and historiographical methods. 1.2 – (Meta)language, (Meta)linguistic discussion and terminology. 2- Identification of the main trends in the western linguistic thought. 3- The framing of the Romance traditions, especially the Peninsular ones, within the European context. 4- The specific case of the Portuguese language within the European context 4.1 – Sources for the historiography of the Portuguese language: from the first “grammatization” to “glottological science”. 4.2 – The typology of metalinguistic production in Portuguese (monolingual and bilingual). 4.3 – Characterization of genres, practices and codifying discourses.5. Analysis of the specificity of linguistic thought and of the production about/ in Portuguese.

Teaching Methods

Teaching methodologies comprise moments of theoretical exposition, of analysis of texts (primary and secondary sources), making use of powerpoint, digital libraries and other materials, as well as of students’ presentations of topics covered in the syllabus. Each student’s autonomous research work will be supervised in weekly tutorial sessions. Students may choose between two modes of assessment: (i) submission of a written essay on one of the topics of the syllabus (100%); (ii) written exam (cf. RAUÉ)
