Sustainable Development Goals
Learning Goals
The main learning outcomes of the CU are an appreciation of the important role of a territorially-based
approach to the economy of a given region, and the ability to apply the principles of sustainable
development to regional development, thereby contributing to the design and implementation of
interdisciplinary development strategies and policies that take account of the integration of environmental,
social and economic concerns.
The core skills to be acquired are: knowledge about the spatial dimension and its effects on the economy;
theoretical, methodological and empirical knowledge regarding economic theory as applied to the region;
methodologies, diagnostics and policies related to specific territorial problems; knowledge related to multisectorial
and multi-scale planning at local and regional levels; the knowledge and skills necessary for an
integrated approach to development that includes environmental and socio-economic components as well
as institutional and political ones.

Teaching Methods
Classroom sessions will be theoretico-practical, which will permit the presentation of various theoretical
approaches to the analysis of the territory, as well as the undertaking of related empirical exercises by
students on the same issues.
Assessment will be by continuous assessment and exam. In continuous assessment, students will perform
assignments based on individual research, that allow them to analyse the characteristics of a given
territory and to define appropriate strategies; in the exam, students will undertake a written test to assess
their knowledge and understanding of the themes covered in the CU.
