Learning Goals

Provide an overview of the canine and feline species, with emphasis on understanding the behaviour, processes of communication and language. Give basic knowledge for education and training of the dog. Provide the essential experience for identifying behavioural problems of dogs and cats. Promote ethical awareness and citizenship of dog in society.

2. The domestication of the dog;
3. Biology and behaviour;
4. The ontogenic development of the dog;
5. The genetic influence on behaviour;
6. Learning and training - dog primary education, training procedures.
7. Main Behavioral Disorders in dogs
8. Biology and evolution of the cat;
9. Sensory skills;
10. Ontogenic development;
11. Social behaviour;
12. Communication;
13. Main behavioural disorders in the cat.

Teaching Methods

Theoretical and practical classes are lectured according to themes, in or the field with the animals. Themes are presented using audiovisual material to explain different aspects of articles. Students are provided with case studies for knowledge and discussion in class, eventually using real situations also reported by students. In practical classes, students will have the opportunity to try out hands-on different teaching techniques with different dogs.
For the continuous assessment, the student must pass a written test scheduled in the last week of the semester, with a minimum score of 9.5.
In the situations previewed in the academic regulations, students can be assessed in a final exam, which consists of a written test.
