Learning Goals

The Imaging focuses on companion animals, equines, farm animals and exotic animals, and aims to:
- develop knowledge in Radiology, Ultrasound, Endoscopy, Computed Tomography, Magnetic Resonance and Nuclear Medicine;
- raise awareness of the importance of radiobiology and radioprotection;
- address the normal imaging anatomy and alert to deviations from normality;
- develop the methodological approach to imaging interpretation.

The student must acquire the following skills, by knowing:
- to identify the components of the diagnostic imaging equipment;
- to work with radiographic equipment;
- to propose the values of the radiographic constants for a correct radiographic examination;
- the radiographic projections;
- to identify the normal imaging anatomy and highlight the non-normal imaging anatomy;
- to propose possible generic differential diagnoses in view of the observed non-normalities.

Contents

The programmatic content addresses the imaging diagnosis, and the interpretation of the imaging examination applied to companion animals, horses, farm animals and exotic animals.
Introduction to radiology: indications, preparation, and radiological technique.
X-ray production. Radiographic constants. Imagiological contrasts. Radiobiology and radioprotection.
Interpretation of the radiological image and approach to normal and non-normal radiographic anatomy.
Radiographic study of the pharynx, soft tissues of the neck, and chest cavity.
Radiographic study of the head and teeth.
Radiographic study of the thoracic and pelvic limbs.
Radiographic study of the spine.
Radiographic study of the abdominal cavity.
Radiographic study of the urogenital system.
Ultrasonography and ultrasound study in pets and horses.
Endoscopy and endoscopic study in companion animals and horses.

Teaching Methods

The flipped pedagogical methodology will be, whenever possible, the approach used. Students will be provided with various didactic support before or during class, and practical application issues will be discussed. Clinical problems focused on the competences to be acquired by the student will be made available, and the students must propose integrated and duly substantiated solutions.

Assessment

Attendance to a minimum of 75% of theoretical and practical classes is mandatory.
Continuous evaluation:
Theoretical: two moments (MT1 and MT2).
Practice: three moments (MP1, MP2 and MP3).
Final classification: (MT1 + MT2)/2 x 0.3 + (MP1 + MP2 + MP3)/3 x 0.7, only if MT1> 10 values, and MT2>10 values, and (MP1 + MP2 + MP3) / 3> 10 values.
Evaluation by final exam:
Theoretical & Practical: minimum classification of 10 values to approve.
Final classification: T x 0.3 + P x 0.7
