Learning Goals

The main objective of the course is to promote knowledge of the global debates about the definition of the
artistic media, the various disciplinary fields of creation, and his crossing and contamination. It will outline a
panorama of creative practices proposals and dynamics that engender the intermedia condition of contemporary
art. Students are introduced to the creative universes of unavoidable creators, with works in media such as
photography, film, performance, installation, video art and sound art. One intends to provide a comparative
framing of distinctive theoretical analyses and contemporary perspectives concerning the photograph and of
the photographic creation. It will be present a set of creative practices that fit in the extended scope of what is
meant by experimental cinema. Additionally, it will be established a broad approach to the creative production
of video art and sound art in the contemporary international artistic creation.

- Media and media art - plurality and instability of meanings.
- From the “work” to the “project” - Do IT at e-flux.
- Contemporary readings of the “photographic” - expanded field of creation and theories of photography.
- Artists's experimentation and the modernist vision of the photographic aesthetic autonomy.
- Decades of 60’s and 70’s - the appropriation of photography by art and the photographic “derealization”.
- Experimental film - essays for a definition.
- The “cinematic” - plural creation languages and passages among cinema, photography and video.
- Avant-garde cinema, Underground cinema, structural cinema, conceptual cinema, expanded cinema.
- Sound art or art that integrates the sound?
- Sound art, sound and images, sound installations, sound sculptures.
- The hybrid and composite condition of video art and the plurality of creation.
- Video art, performance, body art.

Teaching Methods

The lectures will focus on the contents, theories and debates of each subject matter in the course. The creative
universe and works of key artists will be presented and analyzed. Diverse support materials and media will be
used. The lectures will include sessions where students will be asked to analyze and discuss some very important
texts.
Students will have two evaluation options: continuous assessment or final exam.
The former will include one final test, short essays written in class, two reflection papers on specific texts, and a
PowerPoint presentation on a particular artist or artistic movement.

The percentages of calculation of the evaluation are organized as follows: 50% tests; 30% work; 20% attendance
and participation.
