The objectives of this curricular unit are the logical and operative development of an initial basic premise: the understanding of architectural design not only as the basis of architectural creation but also as a system of representation, proof and explanation of the architectural idea and object, as well as the intimate expression of the architect's thought.
This development of this premise is substantiated in the following main objectives:
a) Knowledge and mastery of architectural design as a system of recognition, understanding and codification of reality;
b) Knowledge and mastery of architectural design through its History, as a way of knowing Architecture and architects;
c) Knowledge and mastery of architectural design and its most elementary techniques, in the understanding of the possibilities of appropriation and creative manipulation of the same for the sake of rigor and expressiveness.
This development of this premise is substantiated in the following main objectives:

a) History of Architectural Design (part I)
The role of architectural design in the History of Art and Architecture; its relation with the unique moments of Human History and the transversal influences of and with other areas of knowledge exploring the contributions of classical authors.
b) The Descriptive Design (part I)
- Concepts of proportion and scale;
- Framing and composition: concepts of axis, symmetry, hierarchy, rhythm and repetition;
- Sketch, sketch, note;
- Spaces and environments, outside and inside;
- Rigorous design: Plant, cut, elevation, detail;
- Simple axonometric perspective: the volume and the three-dimensional vision;
- Light, shadow and penumbra;
- The model as an extension of the architectural graphic expression.

b) Practical classes
The evaluation will be ongoing, with personalized weekly reviews. There will be exercises in the and two main practical works, one corresponding to an intermediate delivery and another corresponding to the final work. These works will constitute studies on existing outstanding buildings or reference projects.
