Learning Goals

- Study of some hypothesis for defining the word "jazz" and it's etymology. 
- Study of the historical and cultural contexts that frames the different eras of jazz history from it's beginning and until the late 1940's
- Analise the principal musical and performative characteristics and aesthetics of each of these eras of jazz history.
- Gain knowledge about the most important musicians and personalities of each era and understand their contributions to the history of jazz.
- Accomplish an investigation about a personality that represents one of the studied eras of jazz history.

- Definitions of jazz and it's fundamental characteristics.
- Investigative methodology
- Roots
- Early Jazz
- The Swing Era
- The Bebop Era

Teaching Methods

- Presentation of the various topics (or chapters) mentioned in the syllabus by means of slides in Power Point, with bibliographical references and accompanied by audition and discussion of emblematic recordings that frames each topic.
- Discussion of investigative methodology and of the investigation.
Evaluation:
- Test including blindfold test, questions with multiple answers and questions to develop the answer.
- Evaluation of the investigation presented by the student in the room:
- Wording of the work: clear writing, avoiding redundancies, repetition and colloquial terms. Use of technical terms and their explanation.
- Depth and quality of the investigation.
- Ways of presentation: clear and interesting
- Organization of the work: in coherence with the principals of the discussion about investigative methodology.
