Learning Goals

- Study of the historical and cultural contexts that frames the different eras of jazz history since the 1950's until present day.
- Analise the principal musical and performative characteristics and aesthetics of each of these eras of jazz history.
- Gain knowledge about the most important musicians and personalities of each era and understand their contributions to the history of jazz.
- Accomplish an investigation about a personality that represents one of the studied eras of jazz history.

- Investigative methodology and scientific writing
- 1950's - Cool and West Coast
- 1950's - Third Stream and Hard Bop (and it's ramifications)
- The 50's and 60's - Miles Davis
- The 50's and 60's - John Coltrane
- 1960's - Avant Garde/Free Jazz
- 1960's - Mainstream
- 1970's - Jazz-Rock Fusion
- Jazz since the 1980's

Teaching Methods

- Presentation of the various topics (or chapters) mentioned in the syllabus by means of slides in Power Point, with bibliographical references and accompanied by audition and discussion of emblematic recordings that frames each topic.
- Discussion of investigative methodology and of the investigation.
Evaluation:
- Test including blindfold test, questions with multiple answers and questions to develop the answer.
- Evaluation of the investigation presented by the student in the room:
- Wording of the work: clear writing, avoiding redundancies, repetition and colloquial terms. Use of technical terms and their explanation.
- Depth and quality of the investigation.
- Ways of presentation: clear and interesting
- Organization of the work: in coherence with the principals of the discussion about investigative methodology.
