Presentation
In this training students develop skills in the analysis of stratigraphic sequences gathering information lithostratigraphic, biostratigraphic and chronostratigraphic to understand the stages of geological history recorded in sedimentary basins.
Sustainable Development Goals
Learning Goals
Interpreting the stages of history and evolution of Earth from the stratigraphic information; Define and characterize stratigraphic units; With the analysis of geological maps build, comprehend, and interpret stratigraphic columns; Analyze and interpret the relationships between different rocks, characterizing their relations in space and time (Relative vs. Absolute Dating); Analyze and interpret the facies succession in terms of evolution of sedimentary environments; Understand and use the International Stratigraphic Chart; Develop skills in analysis of stratigraphic records and fossiliferous contents.
Contents
Definition and objectives. Principles of Stratigraphy. Dimension "time" and ordering of events; Paleontology, Sedimentology and Geochronology applied to Stratigraphy; Biostratigraphy and Magnetostratigraphy; Analysis of sedimentary and volcanic-sedimentary sequences; Stratigraphic correlations; Sedimentary discontinuities, sedimentary facies, Paleogeography and Paleoclimatology; Chronostratigraphical and geochronologica scalesl; Radiometric dating methods; The International stratigraphic chart;
The steps of the History and Evolution of Earth; Precambrian: Archean, Paleoproterozoic, Mesoproterozoic and Neoproterozoic; Phanerozoic: Paleozoic, Mesozoic and Cenozoic;
Supercontinent cycles: Rodinia, Gondwana and Pangea; The evolution of life on Earth; The evolution of plate tectonics, continental drift, crustal recycling and orogenies; Models of paleogeographic and paleoclimatic reconstructions.

Teaching Methods
Teaching methods:
Theoretical classes using multimedia.
Use of the Moodle platform (bi-learning).
Practical classes with resolution exercises for analyzing data from case studies: elaboration of geological sections and design of lithostratigraphic columns from geological maps, stratigraphic correlation and interpretation of sedimentary environments, fossil content and paleogeographic evolution. Report of a research initiation activity on Sequential stratigraphy, with the analysis of sedimentary facies and definition of depositional models and systems.
Assessment methods:
Reports of activities developed in laboratory classes.
Two theoretical tests (2) or Final theoretical exam (1). Final practical exam (1).
Final grade = 0.5 * (Theoretical grade) + 0.4 * (Practical grade) + 0.1 * (laboratory activity reports)
