Sustainable Development Goals

Learning Goals

Chemistry Seminar I involves gaining experience in a technique (experimental or computational), or sequence of techniques, new for the student and of sufficient complexity, in the preparation of a monograph on the principles of the technique and results obtained and their discussion in a session open to all students in the Doctoral Program in Chemistry and to all of its lecturers.
The main objective is to ensure that every student masters the fundamental theoretical principles of a prominent technique which they will use for their thesis work, understand the advantages, limitations and applications of this technique and gain practical experience in its use and in the analysis of real results obtained with the technique.
It is intended to develop the students’ capacity for autonomy in the planning and execution of the work, in the organisation and presentation of the information, as well as their integration into research.

Contents

The theme to be treated by each student is not fixed and needs prior approval of the jury of the curricular unit. It should be related to the topic of the student´s thesis project and should be relevant in view of the objectives and skills that the Doctoral Program in Chemistry aims to develop. The monograph should include some results obtained by the student and with analysis and discussion of the results carried out by the student. It may also include results collected from publications that illustrate applications of the technique. Students are also encouraged to attend conferences.

Teaching Methods

The teaching methodology is student-centred learning. In this task, the work of preparation of the monograph and its public presentation is accompanied individually by each student´s supervisor who guarantees provision of the necessary conditions for the realization of the work, especially in terms of equipment, reagents and bibliography, as well as experimental training in the UÉ and, where justified, a short course at another institution. The entire process is monitored by the teaching staff of the curricular unit which also has responsibility for the assessment and assignment of the final grade.
The final grade is based on i) assessment of the monograph (8-14 values or 0 if not satisfactory) and ii) presentation and discussion (2-6 values or 0 if not satisfactory).
