It is expected that by the end of the course, students will have developed the ability to:
- Understand the principles of paediatric palliative care and its specificities;
- Identify the psychosocial and spiritual needs of the child/young person with complex chronic illness;
- Develop ethical, relational, and culturally sensitive competences in the integrated approach to the child/young person and family living with complex chronic illness;
- Develop communication skills in paediatric palliative care settings;
- Identify effective symptom control and pain management strategies tailored to the child/young person;
- Understand interventions that promote self-care and self-management in the child/young person receiving paediatric palliative care, actively involving the family in the care process;
- Understand national and international organisational models and public policies related to paediatric palliative care.

Contents
1 ? Foundations of Pediatric Palliative Care:
Essential concepts, WHO and EAPC principles, ACT categories, and differences compared to adult palliative care;
2 ? Ethical, Cultural and Family Perspectives: Ethical decision-making, child/young person and family-centred approach, progressive autonomy, and cultural and spiritual aspects;
3 ? Communication in Pediatric Palliative Care: Communication with the child/young person and family, breaking bad news, anticipatory grief, emotional management, and empathetic listening;
4 ? Symptom Control and Pain Management: Pain assessment and control, common symptoms, and comfort measures;
5 ? Support for self-care and self-management, including throughout the grieving and end-of-life process: support for the family/siblings and prevention of burnout;
6 ? Organizational Models and Health Policies;
National/international models, inpatient and home care, primary healthcare, and public policies in Portugal.

Teaching Methods
The microcredential adopts a student-centered teaching methodology that promotes active, reflective, and applied learning.
This course, supported by the MedTech-Next Project, incorporates the use of advanced technological resources, including digital environments and technology-based platforms applied to education. A variety of pedagogical tools will also be used to foster active participation and contextualization of content, namely:
- Analysis of real clinical cases, promoting knowledge integration and clinical reasoning;
- Role-playing, focusing on communication skills in contexts of suffering and grief;
- Explanatory videos and testimonials from families and professionals, facilitating the understanding of the human and emotional dynamics associated with pediatric palliative care;
- Group discussion and critical reflection, encouraging ethical and collaborative thinking;
- Interactive learning resources, designed to support education in an online environment.

Assessment
Assessment takes place at the end of each session and consists of an individual assignment, which may include open-ended questions designed to stimulate critical thinking and focused on the application of the content covered.
Successful completion of the curricular unit depends on obtaining a final ?pass? grade, with no qualitative or quantitative classification.
