The Curricular Unit aims to foster the development of musical skills, at the levels of cultural background, aural recognition and basic music teaching techniques to a group of students whose professional objectives are Preschool and Basic Education.

The learning objectives of the Curricular Unit are:
- To recognize the main musical genres and styles, their evolution, and their historical and social contexts.
- To identify the main composers and works of the European music canon across different historical periods.
- To understand the different academic approaches to the study of musical practices, particularly from the fields of Musicology and Ethnomusicology.
- To critically reflect on the phenomena of World Music, Popular Music, and Jazz.
- To identify different musical characteristics and repertoires within various musical cultures of the world, including World Music, Popular Music, and Jazz.
- To know musical repertoires aimed at children and youth in different contexts.

The Traditional Canon
- Terminology and style: Antiquity; baroque, classicism; romanticism; contemporary;
- Composers and repertories;
- The perspective of Musicology and Ethnomusicology
- Western and non-Western music

World Music
- Concepts and scope
- Musical Genres and Styles; Contexts and repertoires

Popular Music in the West
- The Study of Popular Music
- The cultural and social significance of Popular Music
- The Jazz, Rock and Pop
- Musical repertoires for children and youth.

Teaching Methods

TP classes: 1) Hearing of musical examples and the respective analysis according to the scientific criteria that are being taught; 2)Lectures on the content of the program. 3) Critical discussion with students on the analyzed examples, aiming to foster their analytical and reflective thinking.
The work required of students, it is also divided into two main axes: 1)Research work, carried out by students in a study context, around the sources given by the teacher, namely bibliographic examples, with a particular focus on didactic methods of musical training for children;2)Presentation of musical examples carried out by students in a study context, based on examples proposed by the teacher according to the criteria learned.
