Sustainable Development Goals

Learning Goals

The objective of this curricular unit is to insert the principles involved in the operation of aircraft systems and to operate them. Principles of data acquisition for aircraft systems; Working with MATLAB for data acquisition and processing; Modeling and simulation of the dynamics of aircraft systems (electrical, electronic, hydraulic and pneumatic aircraft systems); Design automatic controllers to control the dynamics of aircraft systems (PID and LQR).

Contents

Instrumental Electronics - Rectifiers. Semiconductors and transistors. Amplifiers. Spectral decomposition; Nyquist-Shannon theorem. Data Acquisition: sampling, A/D and D/A conversions. Signal Processing.

Aircraft Systems - General description of aircraft systems. Aircraft electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems. Control surfaces. Pressurization systems. Landing gear. Anti-icing/de-icing. Emergency systems. Fuel systems.

Analysis and Control of Aircraft Systems - Laplace transforms and transfer functions. First and second order systems. Analysis in the time and frequency domains. State space modeling. Stability analysis. PID and LQR Controller design.

Teaching Methods

Lectures use PowerPoint presentations. Theoretical-practical classes are complemented by the resolution of exercises. In at least one of the theoretical-practical classes, a seminar is organised with a guest expert. The pedagogical model is further reinforced by the use of Moodle digital platforms where support materials are made available.

Assessment

The assessment elements of the curricular unit are graded on a scale from [0, 20]. Continuous assessment or final exam assessment is carried out in accordance with the Academic Regulations of the University of Évora.

The assessment method consists of the following components:
[P] Series of 5 problems (25%);
[T] Test (75%);
[E] Final Examination

Students can choose between one of two possible assessment methods, where the Final Grade [FG] is calculated as follows:
1) CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT: FG = 0.25*P +0.75*T
if FG>= 9.5 ^ P>= 9.5 ^ T>= 8.0 then student is Approved.

2) FINAL ASSESSMENT: FG = E
if FG>= 9.5 then the student is Approved.
