Learning Goals

Understanding of the principles that regulate melodic and harmonic construction in an expanded tonal context and in a modal context; knowledge of the typical harmonic forms in jazz repertoire; gain new methods to practice improvisation; knowledge about the principles of harmonic substitution, reharmonization and of melodic superimposition;  understanding of the parameters involved in the construction of an improvised solo.
Analyzing harmonic progressions in an expanded tonal context; knowledge of the ways to depart from diatonicism keeping function or not; analyzing harmonic progressions in a modal context; determining chord-scales for any chord in a harmonic progression; analyzing the relations between harmony and melody.

Contents

Reharmonization of diminished chords; H-W and W-H scales; modal harmony; hybrids and polychords; coltrane-changes; hexatonics; parameters to build an improvisation;
Functional harmony; tonal harmony; contiguous II-V; constant structures and parallel chords;

Teaching Methods

Orientation towards the established syllabus regarding the related semester, drawing 2 hours weekly classes divided into the categories of theory and analysis with a variable proportion between the two regarding their codependency and the inherent juxtaposition.
Musical examples (audio, video and/or scores) will be presented, analysed parametrically, harmonically and melodically; theoretical concepts will be presented, commented and openly discussed.
Continued evaluation (40%): attendance and punctuality, commitment and concernment, relevancy in participation, delivery of requested works, ability to solve proposed exercises in class, presentations and midterm.
Semestral evaluation (60%): final test.
