Apprehension of basic knowledge about mechanics and resistance of materials, so that students can better reconcile structural systems with architectural design.
Contents
Introduction. Gravity acceleration. Mass and weight. Notion of moment of a force. S.I. Units
Particle equilibrium. Notion of force. Traction and compression. Diagram of axial forces. Notion of tension and extension. Law of Hooke. Linear and non-linear behavior. Elastic and plastic behavior. Behavior fragile and ductile.
Cables and arcs. Stability. Efforts. Analogy between cables and arcs. Stability of domes and vaults.
Isostatic and hyperstatic structures: Degrees of freedom and connections to the outside. Balance conditions in space and plane. Types of support and reactions generated.
Isostatic trusses. Method of the nodes and method of the sections. Identification of the type of stress to which each bar is subject: traction or compression.

Teaching Methods
The course is organised into theoretical-practical classes, which are organised into oral presentations, exercises and discussions.
Assessment
The grade for this course may be determined by one of the following assessment methods: continuous assessment or a final exam.
Continuous assessment based on attendance*: Final Grade = (0.60 × F) + (0.30 × T) + (0.10 × A)
Assessment by regular-session exam*: Final Grade = (0.70 × EN) + (0.20 × T) + (0.10 × A)
Assessment via regular retake exam*, special exam*, and extraordinary exam*: Final Grade = (0.80 × EN) + (0.20 × T)
Where:
FinalGrade ? cannot be less than 10 points.
F ? 2 midterms, the arithmetic mean of which cannot be less than 10 points, and the minimum grade on each midterm cannot be less than 7.5 points.
EN ? exam with a minimum grade of 10 points.
E ? exam with a minimum grade of 10 points.
T ? assignments to be completed during the period
A ? attendance.
* - If deemed necessary to assess the extent to which the student has acquired the knowledge and skills specified for the course, in each of the assessment methods, the instructor may require the student to take an oral exam, in accordance with Article 110, paragraph 13, of the Academic Regulations of the University of Évora, provided that the conditions set in forth of Article 116º and one of Article 118º of the same Regulation are met. The oral exam will account for 50% of the final grade for the written exam.
Class attendance is mandatory (75% of classes).
In this course, the use of artificial intelligence tools and electronic devices is not permitted, with the exception of scientific calculators.
