Learning Goals

In this course the student will:
- Acquire knowledge about planning and executing a sampling plan, and the theory of estimation for the most commonly known sampling designs.
- Master fundamental concepts on estimation and sampling techniques useful for applications.
- Develop skills to plan, organize, implement and conduct a survey sampling study;
- Critically evaluate the use of sampling methods;
- Work alone and in group;
- Correctly use software for sampling design and data analysis

Contents

1. Main steps on planning a sampling design and the selection of sampling units.
2. Methods for data collection in survey sampling.
3. Treatment of non-responses and measurement errors.
4. Simple random sampling: basic ideas and estimation.
5. Stratified random sampling and post-stratification.
6. Unequal probability sampling and sub-sampling designs.
7. Clusters and multi-step sampling designs.

Teaching Methods

Teaching is delivered predominantly through theoretical?practical classes, mainly using the board, complemented with e-learning tools and slide presentations.
Theoretical concepts are introduced by means of application examples from different fields, highlighting the relevance of the syllabus content
Exercises focus on solving problem strategies to motivate students and to show the pratical utility of sampling techniques.
Through the completion of assignments and a project, students are expected to conduct research and prepare content, develop creativity in problem-solving, enhance oral communication skills through project presentations and peer review, reflect on their own work and undertake self-assessment, as well as engage in group work.
Students are encouraged to attend classes regularly and to maintain continuous engagement with the course.

Assessment

Continuous evaluation consists of mini-tests in (40% in total), one homework assignment (30%), and a compulsory final project (30%). The assignment and the project will be carried out in group of two students. The final project must be presented both in written form and orally in the classroom. During the preparation of the assignment and the final project, feedback will be provided on preliminary versions submitted before the final deadline, upon request, although the assessment will focus solely on the final version delivered.
If a student does not achieve approval through continuous assessment, they may take a final exam (70%); however, the project will always be mandatory (30%).
When the grade obtained in the mini-tests, the assignment, and the exam exceeds 17 (out of 20), the student may be required to take an additional oral examination. In such cases, the final grade will be the arithmetic mean of the written assessments and the oral examination.
