Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) constitute one of the main challenges to patient safety and the quality of care provided. It is estimated that a significant proportion of these infections are preventable through the consistent implementation of evidence-based measures, namely hand hygiene, proper use of personal protective equipment, safe management of invasive devices, and adherence to basic and transmission-based precautions. In parallel, the rise in antimicrobial resistance, the increasing complexity of care, and the circulation of pathogens reinforce the need for continuous and up-to-date training of professionals.
In Portugal, the Directorate-General of Health, through the Infection Prevention and Control and Antimicrobial Resistance Program (PPCIRA), as well as international organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), emphasize the importance of developing skills in Infection Prevention and Control (IPC). Therefore, this course presents an opportunity for updating and developing fundamental skills for healthcare professionals, contributing to the continuous improvement of practices and the strengthening of health systems in the face of current and future challenges.
