Chronic kidney disease affects around one million people in Portugal, which corresponds to approximately 10% of the adult population. However, most of these people are unaware of their condition, as the disease is often ?silent? and does not present obvious symptoms in its early stages. The situation is also worrying for patients in the terminal stage of the disease (stage 5), who require renal replacement therapy (dialysis or transplant). There are more than 20,000 patients undergoing renal replacement therapy (RRT) in Portugal, making it one of the European countries with the highest incidence of patients requiring replacement therapy.
These data underline the importance of professionals trained in empowering people to self-care, both in terms of health promotion and disease prevention, and in terms of self-care training, given the changes that occur in the health/disease process and transition process.
Haemodialysis is a procedure that involves sophisticated technology and complex physiology. Investing in the training of haemodialysis nurses is an urgent necessity to ensure the safety and quality of care for people with kidney disease. The complexity of this therapy requires in-depth knowledge and technical skills that go far beyond what is learned in basic training.
