Summary
The introduction of alien species that might become invasive is recognized as a major threat to the oceans. Data bases of alien species in Portuguese coastal and estuarine areas are not available and knowledge on this subject to support the development of adequate action plans is still insufficient. We aim to study the occurrence of marine alien species in Portuguese estuaries and coastal areas, evaluate the environmental conditions that favour or difficult the establishment of potential invaders and increase public awareness on this threat. We expect to clarify the relative importance of vectors of introduction of alien species, and identify environmental conditions that favour or inhibit invaders and species with enhanced invasive characteristics. Proposals on the definition of priority areas and species will be one of the outputs of this project, with the aim of supporting managers and decision makers on the allocation of resources to prevent and/or mitigate the impacts of invaders.
Goals, activities and expected/achieved results
Investigate the occurrence of marine alien species in Portuguese estuaries and coastal areas: identify marine alien species, their invasive status and conditions, and major vectors of introduction; identify priority species and/or areas for control or mitigation purposes; communicate scientific results to the general public.
