Summary
PaleoNaz aims to develop a 4D (time and space-integrated) model of Late-glacial to present environmental changes focused on the Nazaré coastal plain, which in the recent past incorporated a wide coastal lagoon system (Pederneira lagoon), nowadays completely silted.
Results will be compared with equivalent data obtained elsewhere along the Portuguese coast, integrated in the evolutionary model previously proposed for the SW and N Portuguese coast to produce an integrated model of broader scope applicable to the western Iberian façade. Such a model is of fundamental importance to support forecasts of future evolution of these coastal systems, particularly within the context of the ongoing Global Change, including its impacts in littoral ecosystems, with direct use in sound policies of planning and sustainable management of the coastal zone.Goals, activities and expected/achieved results
Goals
-Innovative environmental and climatic information on the post Late-glacial evolution of the Nazaré coastal plain, in the context of the NE Atlantic façade;
-Forecast of future trends of evolution in lagoonal/estuarine areas, land-use policies or management practices at medium/long term;
-The results may be compared with other similar systems and expanding the repercussions at a national level.Activities
