Summary

The study area is the South Shetlands in the Antarctic Peninsula region. Field activities focus in two islands with similar climate: Livingston Island and Deception Island. The project PERMANTAR (Permafrost and Climate Change in the Maritime Antarctic) includes the installation and maintenance of two permafrost monitoring boreholes and of two sites for active layer monitoring (CALM-S).Science objectives of the project focus: on the installation of 5 geomorphodynamics monitoring sites, on studying the influence of climate change on permafrost temperature regimes, modelling the climate variability of the Antarctic Peninsula region and spatial and temporal modelling of permafrost distribution and characteristics. Another important contribution is the implementation of an open-access database on physical properties of the bedrock and deposits of both study areas. This type of data archive provides unvaluable ground information for the modelling community.

Goals, activities and expected/achieved results

Goals

Permafrost and active layer monitoring; present-day geomorphodynamics monitoring; Identifying permafrost characteristics, spatial distribution, and its evolution; Studying volcano-permafrost interactions; Modelling climate variability of the A. P.; Evaluating downscalling of mesoscale atmospheric models in the South Shetlands; Modelling permafrost distribution and temperature in space and time.

Activities

Apresentação de resultados através de: comunicações científicas; artigos científicos; um workshop no final do projecto.Criação de base de dados geotérmicos e de propriedades físicas de rochas da Antárctida.
