Summary
Until the beginning of the 20th century, schist was the common building material in the Northeast and Centre regions of Portugal, due to the presence of a great number of schist outcropping in these regions.
The target area of this study is the north-eastern Portugal characterized by the occurrence of abundant schists. The better occurrences will be evaluate by geological and geophysical studies for to have a good knowledge of that occurrences for optimise their exploitation. We pretend with this project:1- To characterize the schist occurrences with structural, mineralogical, petrographical, petrophysical, chemical and technological studies having as objective the schist utilisation as ornamental and/or building stones;2- To do a technological characterisation of the rocks and a systematic evaluation of the occurrences with good potential;3- Develop a methodology for the application of techniques in order to characterize schist;4- Promote the schist as a geological resource.
