Learning Goals

Objectives: To transmit the protocol fundamentals for the collection of clinical signs and complementary diagnostic procedures (semiotic exploration course) and etiopathogenic and pathophysiological interpretation, aiming at establishing a complete diagnosis, in order to allow the formulation of adequate therapeutic measures and the establishment of a prognosis with a reasonable predictability.
Competences: Through the application of semiotic methodology (Semiotechnics) students will develop skills in collecting symptomatological information, both by physical examination and complementary exams, and in interpretation (Propaedeutics) of patients manifestations.

Theoretical: General medical semiotics Clinical examination methodology; diagnostic, prognostic and clinical trends; clinical thermometry and fever and hypothermia. Special semiology Digestive system; hepatobiliary system; pancreas.
Theoretical-practical: Physical Examination: Anamnesis and general physical examination. Direct, indirect and combined methods; body temperature measurement and registration. Digestive system examination (physical and complementary methods). Laboratory: Collection, identification and sample preparation; hematology and biochemistry general methods; digestive and absorption tests; blood search in feces; analysis of rumen contents (macroscopic, microscopic, physical and chemical); hepatic laboratorial semiotics (evaluation of liver function by adaptation of the Macdonalds test excretion of bromosulphalein BSP); hepatic enzymology; endocrine pancreas laboratory semiotics (glucose tolerance test).

Teaching Methods

Theoretical (13h): Plenary lessons structured for the presentation of the program, starting with an anatomophysiological review, emphasizing the issues of greater semiotic interest. Practical and Laboratorial (26h): Organized in smaller groups of students, they start with the theoretical framework of the objectives and methodological basis Physical Ex: teacher demonstrates exploratory interventions and then monitors their execution by the students. Laboratory tests: The protocols are carried out by small groups of students, and results are discussed thereafter. Tutorials (2h): Includes complementary support to students, individually or in small groups, for study issues clarification.

Assessment

- Theoretical: Continuous Assessment by midterm examination(nº 2; parts' weighting according to the size of study material included) or Final Assessment, by final examination, accounting for 60% of the course unit grade.
- Practical: Final Assessment (exclusively by final examination) accounting for 40% of the course unit grade.
