Summary

The knowledge of the mass-radius relation is thus the only way to estimate a value for the mass of the planet. This way, the development of models that relate the mass and radius for planets with a mass in the range 1-20 times the mass of the Earth, and the comparison with the observational values, will give us crucial information about the processes of planetary structure, formation and evolution. This field of astrophysics is creating a bridge between Astronomy, Physics, Geology and Geophysics. In this context, in the current project we propose to: 1) Using the synergy between different researchers in geophysics, geology and astrophysics, we will obtain models for the mass-radius relation for planets with different internal compositions and structures. 2) We will to use high-resolution instruments (HARPS and UVES spectrographs, ESO), to obtain follow-up radialvelocity measurements of transiting planets detected by photometric surveys.

Objectives

Desenvolver modelos de relação massa-raio para planetas com diferentes tipos de composição química e de rácio gelo/rocha variável:

  • obter medições dos planetas em trânsito detectados por campanhas de medição fotométrica;
  • confirmar a natureza do corpo em trânsito e derivar o seu raio e densidade média;
  • pesquisar planetas de curto período em torno de estrelas na vizinhança solar.
