Course Overview

The Master's degree in Psychology follows the first cycle of academic training in Psychology (Bachelor's degree in Psychology) and aims to:
a) deepen the knowledge in the scientific area of Psychology;
b) develop skills in psychological assessment, analysis, and intervention; and
c) develop personal and interpersonal skills essential for professional practice.

This Master's program spans two academic years and, in the second year, includes a curricular internship and a master's thesis. Thus, and in agreement with the EuroPsy (European Certificate in Psychology), which regulates and recognizes the training of psychologists in Europe, this cycle completes the training obtained in the first cycle, being a context for scientific, professional, and personal development that allows the construction of knowledge and skills necessary for work and research in the field of Psychology. The Master's degree in Psychology (School of Social Sciences, University of Évora) offers three areas of specialization: Clinical Psychology, Educational Psychology, and Social, Work and Organizational Psychology.

Career Prospects

In what contexts can psychologists work?

After completing the Master's degree in Psychology in one of its areas of specialization, students must successfully complete a professional internship and obtain certification from the Order of Portuguese Psychologists (OPP).

Psychologists can work in services, institutions, and organizations, from the public and private sectors, enabling the promotion of psychological intervention and the development and well-being of individuals, groups, and organizations. Thus, psychologists can work in:
(a) health institutions (e.g., hospitals, health centres, emergency services, among others);
(b) educational, training, and research establishments (e.g., schools, special education institutions, vocational training services, teaching and research, among others);
(c) social support and solidarity institutions (e.g., nursing homes, social and community intervention associations, non-governmental organizations, environmental organizations, among others);
(d) justice and social reintegration bodies (e.g., courts, prisons, shelters, among others);
(e) business organizations, public administration, and local authority organizations; and
(f) private practice settings.

Specific Entry Requirements

Admission requirements for the master's degree program

The following may apply for admission to the second cycle of studies leading to the master?s degree in Psychology:

(a) holders of a bachelor?s degree or equivalent in the scientific field of Psychology;
(b) holders of a foreign higher academic degree that is recognized as fulfilling the objectives of a bachelor?s degree by the competent scientific body of the higher education institution where they intend to be admitted; and
(c) holders of an academic, scientific, or professional curriculum that is recognized as demonstrating the capacity to undertake this cycle of studies by the competent scientific body of the higher education institution where they intend to be admitted.

The admission rules for this cycle of studies, the application procedures, and the selection criteria are the responsibility of the competent bodies of each higher education institution.
