The cycle of studies in Biology and Geology presents itself as an innovative degree by providing equity between the training in Biological Sciences and in Geology. It corresponds to a multidisciplinary program combining theoretical information on the various subjects offered with their multiple practical applications (case studies). The structure of the study cycle includes a high number of hours of fieldwork in the area of Biological Sciences and Geology, which provides a balanced training that aims to strengthen the practical application of the scientific knowledge acquired. The teaching in laboratory spaces, which include high-tech equipment based in R&D units of the University of Évora and which support ongoing research projects, creates a scientific and pedagogical environment of excellence fundamental to the academic success of the students. The training is valued for its transversal character, from which a wide range of study methods and techniques in Biological Sciences and Geology stand out, which is reinforced by the attainment of competences in Geographical Information Systems, Environment and Spatial Planning, and Information and Communication Technologies. This solid and cross-cutting degree in Biological Sciences and Geology will enable future graduates to continue their studies in master's degree programs in the two scientific areas and in teaching in Biology, Geology and Educational Sciences.
Biology and Geology
The cycle of studies in Biology and Geology enables graduates to develop professional activities in Biology and Geology teaching, and to plan and execute professional projects in several areas of Management and Nature Conservation, Natural Resources Exploration and Prospection, Environment, Water Resources, and Carbon Neutrality, or even to follow a scientific research career in the areas of Biological Sciences and Geology. It also allows access to second professional cycles in Education Sciences, which confer the specific professional qualification for teaching in the 3rd Cycle of Basic Education and in Secondary Education. Professional opportunities may be provided by private companies and public institutions that are active in areas related to the management, exploitation, and conservation of natural resources. Graduates in Biology and Geology can develop a professional activity in municipalities, polytechnics, universities, parks and nature reserves, centers for the scientific dissemination of natural sciences, environmental education and ecotourism centers, technical and scientific consulting companies in the field of environmental impact assessment, quality control, spatial planning, scientific tourism, and scientific education.
