Learning Goals

This course aims to give the biochemist knowledge about the study of infections diseases, especially focusing on etiology and laboratory diagnosis.
To address the activity of antimicrobials on infectious agents, highlighting the problem of antimicrobial resistance is also in its scope. Finally the laboratory analysis in hospital context will be adressed.

Contents

Theoretical program:
1 - The Clinical Analysis Laboratory
2 - Selection, collection, transport and processing of clinical samples for microbiological analysis.
3 - Sterilization, pasteurization, disinfection and asepsis.
4 - Antimicrobial agents.
5 - Laboratory diagnosis of infectious diseases.
6 - Clinical bacteriology: classification, morphology and physiology.
7 - Clinical Mycology: morphology and general biology. Immunity and chemotherapy of fungal infections.
8 - Clinical Virology: viral structure and classification of viruses. Diagnosis, pathogenesis, prevention and control.
9 - Protozoa and helminths of clinical importance.

Practical program:
Bacteriological examination: Isolation and identification of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria.
Antimicrobial susceptibility test.
Molecular diagnostic techniques.
Mycological analyzes.
Serological diagnosis.
Virological diagnosis.

Teaching Methods

Each week there will be a lecture (120 min) and a practical (120 min).
The lectures will be plenary dedicated to the acquisition of concepts and basic knowledge. The practical classes will be practical work developed by students after exposure by the teacher.

The syllabus is presented using audiovisuals (PowerPoint, Canva, etc.) and student-centered active learning methodologies, including problem-based learning.

Regarding the inevitable integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI), its use in the context of this course unit must be guided by ethical, pedagogical, and scientific principles. AI use is permitted only for research papers, reports, or projects, specifically for tasks such as research support and document organization (e.g., identifying sources, structuring bibliographies), linguistic and stylistic assistance (e.g., grammar correction, improving the flow of the original text), analytical and brainstorming support (e.g., generating ideas for structure), and assistance in creating presentations based on previously produced content. In this course unit, the use of AI is prohibited for the complete generation of answers or assignments, the automatic solution of assessed exercises or problems, the production of texts intended for submission as original work, and the drafting of reports without human intervention.

Assessment

Continuous Assessment - 2 tests - minimum score of 10 (9.5) or higher in each test. The grade is based on the average.
Exam format - written exam. Minimum score of 10 or higher.
In both tests, the knowledge and skills acquired in theoretical and practical classes will be assessed.

The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools is not permitted during any of the evaluation moments considered for this curricular unit.
If deemed necessary to verify the extent to which the student has developed the knowledge and skills required for the course unit, the teaching team may summon the student for an oral examination, in accordance with n.º 13 do artigo 110.º do Regulamento Académico da Universidade de Évora, ensuring the conditions set out in paragraph n.º 4 do artigo 116.º e no n.º 1 do artigo 118.º of the same Regulations. The grade will be that of the oral examination.
