Course Overview

Project management toolkit for sustainability is a highly interdisciplinary program focused mainly on bachelor students in all fields of study interested in project management as a tool to address sustainability challenges in their regions.
The team of trainers involved in developing the program comes from various fields: management, marketing, education, engineering, etc. The curriculum is designed with equal input from all teachers involved from the 7 EU GREEN partner universities. We are committed to organizing this BIP yearly, with partners taking turns in the administration of the program - the first edition took place in Oradea, Romania. The curriculum, focused on how to approach critically and creatively sustainability challenges using project management tools, was revised after the first year's experience. It is currently based on five main modules, as follows:
Module 1. Defining regional sustainable challenges, societal and environmental change, political changes, and new regulations with topics on: 1.1. The theory and practice of sustainable development; 1.2. Introduction to the SDG framework; 1.3. The role of SDGs in promoting sustainability; 1.4. Stakeholders upstream and downstream for sustainability and impact in different areas.
Module 2. Project Management aligned with SDGs ? a module dedicated to the presentation of main concepts of management and business with a focus on projects: 2.1 Introduction to project management; 2.2 Strategic thinking for project management; 2.3 Toward socially engaged project.
Module 3. Project management concepts and tools?covering the following aspects: 3.1. Project teams and leadership; 3.2. Risk Management; 3.3. Using a network to visually display a project and scheduling, 3.4. Dealing with uncertainty in durations (PERT); 3.5. Time, Costs, Social and Environmental trade-offs.
Module 4. Communication and dissemination of the project, which provides students with insights on dissemination of projects and their results, with an emphasis on sustainability and the SDGs: 4.1. The impact of communication on project outcomes; 4.2. Developing a communication plan tailored to stakeholder needs; 4.3. Tools and Techniques for Effective Communication; 4.4. SDGs and Communication?
Module 5. Project management for sustainability is the practical part, the only module covered in the physical part. It is split into two main directions: students groups developing their projects targeted at solving sustainability/SDG-related challenges, and the other direction Providing students with examples, case studies, and study visits to partners with relevant projects in promoting sustainability and the SDGs (projects from all EU GREEN research clusters will be included and a wide variety of fields of study will be addressed). The topics covered in this module include: 5.1. Interdisciplinarity and team management in projects; 5.2. Writing a project; 5.3. Reviewing a project (including sustainability impact) and 5.4. Case studies and study visits.
As such, this BIP is relevant to all research clusters, and the students coming from all fields of study find their place. In the first edition,n we had students from economic sciences, engineering, medical school, environmental studies, data analysis, and other fields.

For Whom

Students from all fields of study are welcome, as project management offers a toolkit applicable across all areas of activity. Moreover, through this BIP, we intend to emphasize interdisciplinarity. Both teachers and participants should be from diverse study fields so the solutions found to SDG/sustainability challenges would embed different points of view. Undergraduate, master?s, and doctoral students, as well as researchers, from any scientific field.
