Learning Goals

General objectives: To frame the research on the study of Language Acquisition and to characterize this study regarding the specific case of Portuguese, with particular focus on the European variant, at the various linguistic levels, giving an account of the impact of the education system in this process.
Expected results: At the end of the school semester, students should be able to: give an account of how studies on Language Acquisition have evolved since the 1950s; characterize the fundamental stages of Portuguese acquisition and development; analyze extracts of relevant language productions at various age levels (from birth to adolescence), identifying the standard characteristics for each of these levels; characterize the impact of the frequency of the language acquisition system. teaching (pre-school and 1st cycle) in the development process.

Contents

I – Introductory aspects
1 - Characterization of the fundamental research paradigms and their methods – brief historical synopsis.
2 - Transcription and data analysis tools.
II - Acquisition and Development of Portuguese.
1 - The detonation of the process: universality and specificities.
2 - Phonetic-phonological and prosodic aspects.
3 - Morphological, syntactic, and discursive aspects and respective interface levels.
4 - From oral to written – the impact of the school system on the process of linguistic development; generic characteristics and variation, with reference to the case of Portugal.

Teaching Methods

Collective teaching sessions: theoretical exposition (supported by texts or other materials, including powerpoint presentations), followed by practical application; group work; performing exercises; Presentation of individual or group work.
Tutorials: supervision of the work in progress; clarification of doubts; correction of assignments or exercises.

Assessment

The continuous assessment regime includes individual and group work, to be carried out throughout the semester, in person and in autonomous work (10%), an individual written work (30%) and an attendance test (60%).
The examination regime (normal, appeal and special periods) will consist of a written test, to which a percentage of 100% will be awarded. Students who obtain a grade between 8 and 9.4 in the written test will take an oral test.
