Learning Goals

• To understand the value and role of research in education;
• To understand the nature of the research process, its objectives and processes, including data collection and analysis and the role of theory.
• To know the main paradigms in research in Education, its fundamentals, purposes and implications in the research process;
• To know the main approaches to research, qualitative, quantitative and mixed, and its articulation with the research paradigms;
• To know the main research designs in Education and the specificities and adequacies of each one
• To be able to select and justify and evaluate appropriate methodological options, taking into account concrete research objectives

Contents

1. Research in Education
• Evolution of research in education;
• The role of research in education;
• The nature, objectives and stages of the investigative process.
2. Paradigms and approaches in research
• Positivist, interpretative and socio-critical paradigm: characterization and implications in research;
• Quantitative, qualitative and mixed approaches.
3. Research Designs: Characterization, purposes and their development.
• Designs with the intervention of the researcher (experimental studies, design research, action research, ...)
• Designs without the intervention of the researcher (survey, case study, narrative research, ...)

Teaching Methods

The work in is developed by the responsibility and action of the teacher and is based on the preparatory work carried out by the doctoral students that serves to support the accomplishment of activities of varied nature (collective discussion and small group around the issues under study). The basic elements of the work are selected theses, books and articles, accessible to students.
The approach to the themes takes into account their multiple relationships and seeks to respond to the most relevant issues emerging from doctoral candidates, not necessarily sequentially.
The evaluation considers:
-Participation of the students in the discussions in the classes-20%
-Critical analysis of the methodology of doctoral thesis in Education Sciences, following the guide provided (80%). This work includes feedback by the teacher, aiming to promote the improvement of learning. The justified choice of the thesis represents 10% of the total grade of the uc, the first version of the work-40%
