Sustainable Development Goals

Learning Goals

To provide an overview of different sampling methods and parameter estimation. To emphasize and to apply general sampling and estimation principles. To illustrate the difference between model-based and design-based sampling. To teach model building techniques, goodness of fit, selection and validation of model based sampling. To teach model selection principles based on statistical criteria and model assumptions. To be able to evaluate and criticize misuses of sampling methods. To be acquaintance with different areas of applications in which sampling methods are used. To appropriately use statistical software for parameter estimation.

Contents

1. Finite population sampling.
2. Sampling rare or elusive populations.
3. Estimation of demographic parameters.
4. Sampling in Community Dynamics.
5. Occupancy modeling: selection and estimation.

Teaching Methods

A mixture of theoretical and practical lectures on the blackboard and with support of e-learning tools and visual aids.
Introductory concepts are given using real examples of different areas of applications to show the relevance of programmatic contents.
Exercises will focus on solving problem strategies to motivate students and to show the utility of sampling techniques.
Attendance, classroom participation and continued students' assessments are encouraged.
Emphasis is given to continuous evaluations. Various homework assignments, a midterm and a project will be use as evaluation elements. If continuous evaluation is not feasible for the student, a final examination is possible, but a project is still required for final grade.
