Contextualized survey of the main fields of Western Music History related to the development of the musical instruments chronologically related to the different periods. Development of knowledge capacities of structuring and synthesis of the unit´s content and the associated written and oral expression training.

- Classification Systems of instruments.
- Collections of instruments.
- Main historical transformations of western instruments.
- Case studies: instruments and/or families

Teaching Methods

Theoretical exposition of the main topics of the curricular unit, case studies, scientific discussions of the proposed student´s works, tutorial accompaniment in what concerns the student´s learning process and the respective oral and written skills. Use of recorded musical examples, both audio and audio/video. Research of online resources, namely museums and other institutions with collections of musical instruments, applied to specific cases of musical instruments.

Students can choose between

Continuous evaluation:
-Written test (50%)
-Individual written work (35%)
- Technical file of a musical instrument (15%)

Final evaluation:
-Final written exam (100%)
