Course Overview

The master's degree in teaching Biology and Geology in the 3rd cycle of basic education and secondary education is a course in the area of teacher training in specific subject areas, providing professional qualifications for teaching in recruitment group 520 (Biology and Geology). It has 120 credits in ECTS, equivalent to 3120 hours of training, lasting 2 years. The curricular structure includes four areas of training: teaching area (Biology and Geology), specific didactics, general educational area and initiation into professional practice, which take the form of several curricular units to be taught over four semesters, on a working basis. Supervised Teaching Practice (STP) takes place in primary and secondary schools that have protocols with the University of Évora, providing the student with real contact with teaching practice. The STP is the subject of a report, of an investigative nature, subject to approval in public tests. This master's degree offers solid training designed to deal with current curricular challenges in the areas of Biology and Geology, taking advantage of digital technologies.

The course's study plan is being reformulated to adapt to the recent change in the Legal Framework for Professional Qualification for Teaching (DL 9-A/2025, of February 14, which amends DL 74/2014, of May 14).

Career Prospects

Graduates with a master's degree in teaching Biology and Geology in the 3rd cycle of basic education and secondary education receive professional qualifications for teaching in recruitment group 520 (Biology and Geology), an essential condition for carrying out teaching activities, under the terms of the Legal Regime of Professional Qualification for Teaching in Pre-school Education and Basic and Secondary Education, approved by Decree-Law No. 79/2014, of May 14, as amended.

Specific Entry Requirements

The specific conditions for entering this study cycle are regulated by n. 4 of art. 18 of the Legal Regime for Professional Qualification for Teaching in Pre-School Education and Basic and Secondary Education, approved by Decree-Law no. 79/2014, of 14 May, as amended, namely, integrate 120 ECTS in both disciplinary areas and none with less than 30 ECTS. The other specific conditions are regulated by n. 6 and 7 of art. 18 of Decree-Law No. 79/2014, of May 14, in its current version.
A general admission condition is oral and written command of the Portuguese language and mastery of the essential rules of logical and critical argumentation, in accordance with the legislation in force for this purpose. This condition will be certified by combining a written Portuguese language test and an interview, with approval in both cases. The written test and interview are mandatory for everyone, regardless of their previous training or professional situation. The application can also be made by presenting a certificate of approval, issued by another higher education institution, in which the candidate has taken tests for this same purpose, considering the conditions set out in the legislation in force for this purpose. The written test and interview to assess Portuguese language proficiency will take place on April 7th (1st phase), July 9th (2nd phase) and September 10th (3rd phase) at a location and time to be announced.

In the application documents, it is necessary to present a certificate of qualifications detailing the credits of each course unit, so that the minimum training ECTS set for entry to the course can be verified, as determined by the Legal Regime of Professional Qualification for Teaching in Pre-school Education and in Basic and Secondary Education (DL 79/2014 of 14 May, in its current version).
