Course Overview

This course is a professionalizing Masters, which confers specific professional qualification for teaching the subject of Mathematics in the 3rd Cycle of Basic Education and in Secondary Education, in accordance with current Portuguese legislation (Decree-Law n.º 79/2014, in its current wording ). The curricular structure includes four training areas: teaching area (Mathematics), Specific Didactics (Mathematics), General Educational area and Initiation to Professional Practice, which are implemented in several curricular units to be taught in four semesters. The Supervised Teaching Practice (PES) takes place in schools, which have protocols with the University of Évora, providing the student with real contact with the teaching practice. The PES is the object of a report, of an investigative nature, which is subject to approval in public exams. This Master's Degree offers a solid education aimed at dealing with the current curricular challenges in Mathematics, with an emphasis on the development of mathematical literacy and taking advantage of digital technologies.

The course's study plan is being reformulated to adapt to the recent change in the Legal Framework for Professional Qualification for Teaching (DL 9-A/2025, of February 14, which amends DL 74/2014, of May 14).

Specific Entry Requirements

I. The specific conditions for admission to the Master's course in Teaching Mathematics in the 3rd Cycle of Basic Education and in Secondary Education are regulated by the provisions of point 4 of article 18 of the Legal Framework for Professional Qualification to Teach in Pre-School Education and in Basic and Secondary Education, approved by Decree-Law no. 79/2014, of 14 May, in its current wording. Anyone with a higher education qualification who fulfils the minimum training requirements, namely 120 ECTS in Mathematics, can apply for the course.
The other specific conditions for entry to this cycle of studies are regulated by paragraphs 6 and 7 of article 18 of Decree-Law no. 79/2014, of 14 May, in its current wording. Those who do not have 120 ECTS of training in Maths can apply with at least 90 ECTS (75% of the minimum training requirements) and must obtain the missing credits after entering the course.
II. The general entry requirement is oral and written command of the Portuguese language and command of the essential rules of logical and critical argumentation, in accordance with the legislation in force for this purpose. This condition will be certified by a combination of a written test in Portuguese and an interview. Candidates must pass both. The written test and interview are compulsory for everyone, regardless of their previous training or professional situation. The application can also be made by presenting a pass certificate, issued by another Higher Education institution, in which the candidate has taken tests for the same purpose, taking into account the conditions laid down in the legislation in force for this purpose. The written test and interview to assess proficiency in Portuguese will take place on 7th April (1st stage), 9th July (2nd stage) and 10th September (3rd stage) at a place and time to be announced.
III. When submitting your application, you will need to present your qualification certificate, detailing the credits for each course unit, in order to verify the minimum training credits set for entry to the course, as determined by the Legal Framework for Professional Qualification to Teach in Pre-school Education and Basic and Secondary Education (DL 79/2014 of 14 May, in its current version).
