This unit intends to provide an understanding of the breadth and complexity of the notion of landscape.
To present the perspectives of problematizing the notion of landscape and its contribution to philosophical questions of ontology, aesthetics and ethics.

Module I
The problematic definition of landscape. Landscape in situ, in visu, in dicto. Ethical, aesthetic and epistemological aspects. The landscape as a cultural, geographical and economic value.
Module II
The landscape before the notion of landscape. Political-religious landscapes in Antiquity and Middle Ages.
The emergence and evolution of the notion of landscape in the West and China.
Module III
The aesthetic-social function of landscape in Modernity. Landscape and power.
Module IV
Multifunctionality, ambivalence and innovation of contemporary landscapes.

Theoretical presentations; text analysis and hermeneutics; critical viewing of landscapes, gardens, cities, regions, natural and cultural heritage ensembles, using toric texts of philosophy, poetry and art.
