Summary

In littoral areas a high morphodynamics is present, particularly in those ones where sandy beaches are present. Significant morphologic changes frequently conduct to situations in which sedimentary deficiency is evident: beach wide decreases and the foredunes erosion becomes a reality. The knowledge is fundamental to establish proper policy for coastal management. The main goal of this project is to develop a low cost and high efficiency monitoring system. With this system is pretended to perform a quasi-continuous spatial morphologic and sedimentary characterization that occur in the sub-areal beach (foreshore and backshore). This system is based in the application of the GPS to land vehicles. It will be developed a new prototype that will allow a regular survey of coastal stretches with ten of kilometres. It will be also developed another prototype, which allow an automatic characterization of the textural characteristics of the superficial beach sediment.

Objectives

O projecto visa o desenvolvimento de metodologias que permitam a monitorização de praias arenosas, utilizando dados GPS e análise de imagens digitais: um protótipo GPS de alta resolução e de baixo custo, acoplado a um veículo todo-o-terreno, para obtenção do modelo digital de terreno e um protótipo de aquisição de imagem digital para análise texural de sedimentos.

Activities

Estão previstas 8 publicações em revistas internacionais e nacionais; 7  comunicações em encontros científicos internacionais e nacionais; 1 tese de mestrado, 1 aplicação computacional; 2 protótipos laboratoriais e 1 patente. Será criado um website.
