Presentation

Identification of logical components in the research process in Biology, namely biological hypotheses. Fundamentals of sampling and experimental design. Scientific reading and writing.

Sustainable Development Goals

Learning Goals

1 To strength the ability to identify logic features of research in Biology, namely biological hypotheses. To
strength the ability to design and analyse a scientific project in Biology.
2 To develop the ability to critically design scientific projects, read scientific papers, write and present communications.
3 To develop the ability of using basic statistical tools to solve biological problems.
4 To increase language skills in Portuguese and English, as well as numerical, computer and information and
communication technologies skills. Also to develop teamwork skills.

Contents

1 Scientific method and logical design in research in Biology: from observations and problems to
interpretation of results.
2 Biological hypotheses: finding them in scientific work and suggestions to biological problems.
From biological to statistical hypotheses and why we need statistics.
3 Fundamentals of sampling and experimental design.
4 Solving simple biological questions using statistic tools obtained in Statistics courses.
5 Planning scientific projects in Biology. Communication of scientific results: paper writing, oral and
poster presentations (assembling information, presenting results as figures and tables, scientific writing).

Teaching Methods

Theoretical and practical (individual and group) sessions on basic aspects of design, analysis and communication of
research in Biology. Homework (group) to give seminars on project preparation and analysis, paper
writing, oral and poster presentations. Individual tests (theoretical and practical). Individual work on solving problems in design, analysis and communication of information in Biology.
Evaluation through: individual test (40%)+ individual or group work in home or class/class participation and attendance (10%) + oral communication of a scientific article (group work, 25%) + communication in poster format of a scientific article (group work, 25%); or individual exam (50%) + oral communication of a scientific article (group work, 25%) + communication in poster format of a scientific article (group work, 25%).
