Based on the debate surrounding theoretical and empirical perspectives, this course unit aims to provide a critical appreciation of the main approaches in peace studies and an understanding of the complex dynamics of contemporary armed conflict.
Specific Objectives:
a) To critically analyze the fundamental characteristics of the international security order in the post-Cold War era, emphasizing the impact of the end of ideological conflict, the identification of threats to international security, and the reforms of major security institutions.
b) To understand the theoretical foundations of conflicts and approaches to their resolution, exploring key concepts and developing analytical skills to interpret conflict dynamics in various contexts.
c) To develop the ability to assess issues related to crisis management and conflict resolution, focusing on the formulation of effective political strategies for conflict prevention and mitigation.

Teaching Methods
The sessions aim to provoke discussion and reflection on a particular theme and are designed to provide Master's students to a deeper reflection on concepts, theoretical approaches and intervention models.
Participants are encouraged to conduct different learning sessions through oral presentations, brainstorming and discussion forums, supported by audio-visual media, bibliographical media, press clippings, and other electronic, static and virtual media. In some collective sessions experts are invited.
The use of the project-based learning approach is privileged.

Assessment
(1) Participation in the sessions ; (2) preparation and presentation of practical applications of theoretical knowledge acquired in the classroom (25%), and individual work (25%),and test (50%).
Final exam: written test (70%) and an individual work of practical application of the theoretical knowledge acquired (30%).
