Sustainable Development Goals

Learning Goals

The aim of this course is to provide training in the field of flight safety from the perspective of aeronautical engineering, as well as combining it with the aircraft certification process, enabling students to know:
a) how aircraft are developed from an engineering point of view, guaranteeing the safety standards laid down in the legislation;
b) how to implement and ensure safety standards in operations;
c) the aircraft certification process (civil and military) from a flight safety perspective.
At the end of the course, students will have learnt about flight safety (and also security) implementation methodologies, accident investigation processes and aviation legislation relevant to the discussion.
This approach will enable students to be prepared in the future and within the framework of the aeronautical sector to be able to develop and ensure safety standards from an engineering point of view, as provided for in their respective aviation activity.

Contents

1. Flight safety vs. security

2. Safety and Occurrence Prevention: Regulations and Legislation; Information Systems; Human Factors; Airport Infrastructure; Analysing Case Studies.

3. Security: Regulations and Legislation; Technical and Operational Components; Airport Infrastructures; Case Study Analyses.

4. Aircraft certification process: the European case. Legislation.

Teaching Methods

Lectures using videos illustrating the cases;
Lectures guided by notes prepared by the lecturer/professor;
Practical classes including real cases - discussion;
Presentations by invited specialists (when feasible).

Assessment

I) Continuous Assessment
M = Monograph on Flight Safety or Aircraft Certification;
T = Test
The final mark is obtained by: 0.6xM + 0.4xT
with (M)>9.5 and (T)>9.5

II) Assessment during exam period:
E = Exam
where (E)>9,5
