Learning Goals

This course on critical thinking intends to contribute to a better performance of students whenever they have:
1) to critically react to what they read in books, journals, newspapers or on the internet;
2) to actively participate in classes and seminars;
3) to build an argument of their own;
4) to write an essay in defense of a certain conclusion.

Contents

Introduction
1. Argumentation, Critical thinking and Philosophy
1.1.Plato’s The Socrate apology
1.2.Kant’s supposed right to lie
1.3.Perelman’s distinction between formal logc and informal logic.
2. Basic concepts of classical logic.
2.1.Formal Logic: basic concepts, rules and fallacies.
2.2. Informal Logic: basic concepts, rules and fallacies.

Teaching Methods

A) Reading and analyzing texts.
B) Analysis of argumentative techniques.
C) Discussion of examples.

Assessment

The assessment will result from the classification obtained in the final grade of the continuous assessment regime or in the final grade of the exam regime, as follows:
1. For students who opt for the continuous assessment system, the final grade will be obtained based on the following assessment elements:
a) 1st Attendance Test (50%);
b) 2nd Attendance Test (50%).
2. For students who opt for the final assessment system, the final grade will be the result of the classification obtained in the exam test, which will cover all the material taught during the academic semester.
